In the new study, the researchers studied two genetically modified female mice.In one group, they studied mice with elevated levels of ADP, as well as other mice lacking ADP.Half of the mice in each group received male sex hormones that induced PCOS symptoms in normal mice.Mice with high levels of ADP were protected against PCOS related metabolic disorders, such as insulin resistance and abdominal obesity.However, ADP does not prevent ovulation disruption.
The results suggest that ADP plays an important role in adipose tissue function and may also play a role in obesity and insulin resistance in PCOS women. Therefore, drugs similar to ADP may be an effective treatment for metabolic disorders in women with PCOS.
