There are a large number of mutated proteins in tumors, one of which is called histone. The normal function of this protein is to package DNA to help regulate gene expression. But according to a recent study, the so-called tumor histones in tumors are far more common than we thought.
Over the past decade, Allis and others have studied mutant histones associated with different tumors, such as some brain and bone cancers. Based on these studies, Allis decided to investigate whether tumor histones also exist in other types of tumors.
Medical Oncology Researchers at the Cancer Center use the hospital's tumor sequencing database and other available public data to determine the frequency of histone mutations in different tumors. They found that 4% of the samples they analyzed showed tumor histones - much higher than previous reports. The researchers also found that these mutations affect histones that were not found in the past.
“These results confirm a growing view that many histone mutations may promote tumor growth in a way we don't currently know.” Allis said, “This study has helped us understand the most basic part of histone biology, and this is the first step in helping us develop new drugs for these mutations.”
