Smoking may Reduce Survival in Skin Cancer Patients

Smoking is very harmful. It is well known that smoking is easy to cause lung cancer. Smoking may also reduce the body's ability to fight deadly skin cancer.
According to a new study funded by the British Cancer Research Center, Melanoma patients who had smoked were 40 percent less likely to survive than those who had not. Among the 156 patients in the group with the most genetic markers of immune cells, smokers were 4.5 times less likely to survive than nonsmokers. Considering that smokers had the lowest survival rates among those with the highest number of immune-cell markers, the researchers suggest that smoking may directly affect how smokers' bodies fight melanoma cells. The study found a link between smoking and melanoma survival, but it was not certain that smoking caused the decline.
Other scientists have found that smoking has a negative impact on the immune system, but it is not clear which chemical is causing the effect. Researchers believe that smoking negatively affects a patient's immune system, this changes the immune system's ability to fight skin cancer and increases other health risks associated with smoking in patients.
